Chapter 1: Introduction to Soil Mechanics
Scope of soil mechanics (historical background and field of application), definition of soils, origin and formation of soils, soil structure (coarse-grained soils and fine-grained soils).

Objet de la mécanique des sols (Historique et domaine d’application), Définitions des sols, Origine et formation des sols, Structure des sols (Sols grenus et sols fins).

Chapter 2: Soil Identification and Classification
Physical properties of soils, grain size analysis, consistency of fine soils (Atterberg limits), soil classification systems.

Compaction theory, laboratory compaction tests (Standard and Modified Proctor tests), special in-situ compaction equipment and met
hods, compaction specifications and quality control.
