Section outline

  • A social problem is any condition or behavior that has negative consequences for large numbers of people and that is generally recognized as a condition or behavior that needs to be addressed. This definition has both an objective component and a subjective component.

A social problem is an issue within the society that makes it difficult for people to achieve their full potential. Poverty, unemployment, unequal opportunity, racism, and malnutrition are examples of social problems.
There are four characteristics that define social issues:
    1. Negative consequences for many in the population.
    2. Widely recognized by society as an issue that needs solving.
    3. The problem goes against common values and beliefs.
    4. Solutions to the issue include societal change, regulation, or increased resources.
